BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team defeated Elizabethtown, 34-13, in Goldfarb Gym Tuesday night as sophomore Isaac Morales earned his first pin of the season. The Blue Jays earned their first team win to improve to 1-5 on the season, while Elizabethtown falls to 1-4.
How Hopkins Won: Elizabethtown jumped out to a 10-0 lead, with a forfeit win to open the match and Colton Rex posting a major decision victory at 133. Junior Lucas Escobar turned the momentum in favor of Hopkins, earning a narrow 4-3 win over Josh Paisley. Escobar’s victory sparked a seven-bout string of wins for the Blue Jays. Junior Connor Joyce earned his third major decision victory of the season with a 12-0 win, before junior Tommy Grifa and sophomore Dane Morgan posted back-to-back technical falls to give Hopkins the lead 17-10. The JHU run continued as senior Jared Forman collected a forfeit at 174 and sophomore Isaac Morales defeated Dayne Ross by pin in 1:23. Sophomore Miles Gilliam closed out the Hopkins run with a technical fall victory in 3:12. Elizabethtown’s Eric Eckstein won the 285 bout 10-3 for the final team score, 34-13.
For Johns Hopkins: The Blue Jays got wins at 141 (Lucas Escobar), 149 (Connor Joyce), 149 (Tommy Grifa), 165 (Dane Morgan), 174 (Jared Forman), 184 (Isaac Morales) and 197 (Miles Gilliam). A trio of Hopkins wrestlers won via technical fall: Grifa won18-0 (4:13), Morgan earned the win 17-0 (2:01) and Gilliam recorded a 17-0 win (3:12). Morales notched his first pin of the season, and third of his career, in 1:23.
Up Next: Johns Hopkins will return to action in the Waynesburg Invitational in Waynesburg, PA, January 7. The Blue Jays will return to Goldfarb Gym to host Hampden-Sydney and US Merchant Marine Academy January 14.
