JHU Places 9th at Red Dragon Invitational

2009 Red Dragon Invitational Results
ONEONTA, NY - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team had four individuals place in the top six to highlight the Blue Jays' efforts at the 2009 Red Dragon Invitational at Oneonta State on Saturday. The Blue Jays totaled 56.5 points and placed ninth in the 12-team field. The College of New Jersey won the tournament with 152 points. The Lions were nearly 50 points ahead of runner-up Cortland (105.5).
Three of JHU's four place-winners were freshmen and below is a look at JHU's top performers.
Paul Marcello (Fr. 133): The unseeded Marcello dropped his first match to second-seeded Ed Galvin, 8-2, then worked his way through the consolation bracket to earn a fourth-place finish. He won five straight matches in the consolation bracket, including a gutty 3-1 win over fifth-seeded of Justin Davy of Oneonta and a 10-8 victory over Tom Gorestasas of McDaniel. In the consolation final he fell to sixth-seeded Dan Herr from the College of New Jersey, 6-2.
Eric Levenseller (Jr. 165): Levenseller earned a number six seed and worked all the way through the bottom half of the bracket before dropping an 8-1 decision to top-seeded Mike Morin of Southern Maine, 8-1 in the championship bout. Among his three wins on the way to the final was a tough 3-1 win over third-seeded Jimmy Neal of Oneonta in the quarterfinals and a 6-4 win over teammate Dylan Meade in the semifinals.
Dylan Meade (Fr. 165): Meade made a stunning run to the semifinals at 165 before eventually finishing sixth. He opened with a pin of Scranton's Paul Rajan (1:00) before pulling off a stunning upset of second-seeded Justin Bonitatis of the College of New Jersey (15-8). Bonitatis entered the tournament ranked fifth in the nation at the 165. Meade then pinned Cortland's Will Cason (6:55) in the quarterfinals before being bumped to the consolation bracket by teammate Eric Levenseller (6-4). Bonitatis come back with a hard-fought 9-6 win over Meade in the consolation semifinals to drop Meade to a sixth-place finish.
Reid Mosquera (Fr. 197): Mosquera was seeded fourth and placed third at 197. After opening with a pin of Gettysburg's Marshall Puls (2:50) in the quarterfinals, Mosquera took top-seeded and eventual champion Adam Kozial of the College of New Jersey down to the final whistle before falling, 7-6, in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, he decisioned third-seeded Garret Yablonski of WPI (7-3) in the semis before winning the consolation final by default over second-seeded Wala Canario of Oneonta to earn his third-place finish.
