Elizabethtown Defeats Hopkins 24-21 in Home Opener

BALTIMORE, MD - Behind a 6-2 win at 285-pounds, Elizabethtown claimed a 24-21 victory over the Johns Hopkins wrestling team on Wednesday night. Hopkins (0-1) won four straight to force the deciding bout before falling to Elizabethtown (1-0).
It did not look like it would come down to the last match of the night early as Elizabethtown opened up a 21-0 lead with wins in the first five weight classes. Pete Achilles got things started for the Blue Jays with a pin at 125-pounds while Terry Bartholomew had a pin at 141-pounds.
Hopkins started its comeback at 165-pounds as freshman Patrick Stanley (Isle of Palms, SC/Bishop England) recorded a pin over Mike Lussier in 3:59. Junior Chris Floyd (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) followed that up with a pin over Paul Connor at 174-pounds. Senior Eric Fishel (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) recorded a pin at 184-pounds over Bill Meaney to make Hopkins deficit three at 21-18. Junior Tyler Schmidt (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) tied things up in the match with a 7-2 decision at 197-pounds over Deron Sharp.
With the match tied at 21-21, Tim Katzaman was able to record the 6-2 victory over Vincent Domestico (Bellingham, MA/Holliston) at 285-pounds and secure the victory for Elizabethtown.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, November 17 by participating in the Red Dragon Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m.
