Behind Two Individual Champions, Hopkins Finishes Second at Messiah Open

GRANTHAM, PA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team finished second at the Messiah Open on Saturday in its first meet of the season. The Blue Jays had the individual champions at 184 and 197 pounds while three other Blue Jays advanced to the championship bout in their weight class.
The team title at the tournament went to host, Messiah who finished with 122 points on the day. Hopkins had 96 points while McDaniel was third with 64.5 points. Case Western and Kings rounded out the top five with 42.5 and 41.5 respectively.
Senior Eric Fishel (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills), who was ranked 10th in the NWCA Preseason Poll at 184-pounds, got the number one seed for the meet. Fishel had a bye through the first round and then recorded a 5-0 decision over JJ Weltler of Ursinus. He recorded a pin over Nate Murren of Ursinus and captured the weight class with a decision over Matt McHugh of Messiah.
Junior Tyler Schmidt (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) was the number one seed at 197-pounds. After a bye through the first round, he recorded a pin over Brendon Quinones and secured the championship with a 10-5 decision over Ferris Bond of McDaniel.
Freshman Akshay Paintal (Lexington, MA/Phillips Academy) took third place at 125-pounds on Saturday. He opened with a pin over Andrew Reichard of Kings before falling on a decision to Bryce Stever of Messiah. Paintal bounced back with a 5-3 decision over teammate Jared Hullett (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) and a 11-7 decision over Andrew Clark of Messiah.
Freshman Xavier Mohammed (Clarkesville, MD/River Hill) had a strong showing at 133-pounds. Mohammed opened his day with an upset pin of the number one seed Josh Cragg of Messiah. He followed that up with a pin over Josh Boyle of Wilkes before falling on a pin to Domineak Commodore of Messiah in the championship bout. Freshman Matt Cole (Cherry Hill, NJ/Bishop Eustace) advanced to the championship bout at 149-pounds. Cole pinned Steve Snyder of Wilkes and Eric Preefer of McDaniel. He then recorded a 3-1 decision over Craig Gin of Messiah before falling on a 10-5 decision to Drew Gardella of Case Western. Freshman Patrick Stanley (Isle of Palms, SC/Bishop England) had a strong showing at 157-pounds. He recorded a pin over Steven Chencharick and followed that up with a pair of decisions before falling in the championship bout to Mike Bressler of Messiah.
The Blue Jays return to action when they open their home schedule of November 14 at 7:00 p.m. Hopkins will welcome Elizabethtown to Goldfarb Gymnasium.
