ROCKY MOUNT, VA -- Johns Hopkins senior Jared Forman (174) and junior Tommy Grifa (149) advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket on the first day of the 2017 NCAA Division III East Regional Championships. Both will enter Saturday's second day of competition needing three wins to advance to the NCAA Division III Championships; the top three finishers in each weight class at the regional qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Forman, who won his second Centennial Conference title two weeks ago, opened with a 19-3 technical fall victory against Keaton Gomez of Southern Virginia. He was then bumped to the consolation bracket by Ferrum's Blake Rosenbaum in the championship quarterfinals, but advanced to Saturday with a 6-4 overtime victory against Washington & Lee's Brandon LeFore.
Forman will meet Corey Markovitch in Saturday's consolation quarterfinals. A win there would guarantee Forman a top six finish.
Grifa topped Hampden-Sydney's Caleb Corbett, 7-5, in the first round before dropping a 13-3 major decision to 10th-ranked Zach Wilhelm of Stevens.
Grifa won his way into Saturday's consolation quarterfinals with a major decision of his own as he topped Muhlenberg's Ben Peck, 14-6, to advance. He will face NYU's Matt Coppola in his first match on Saturday and, like Forman, would be assured of a top six finish with a win.
In addition to Forman and Grifa, Hopkins got single wins from Christian Vallis (133), Lucas Escobar (141), Conor Joyce (157) and Dane Morgan (165) before each was eliminated.
