Hopkins Finishes Fourth at Centennial Conference Championship

Bracket Breakdown by Weight Class
COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Freshman Patrick Stanley (Isle of Palms, SC/Bishop England) and senior Eric Fishel (Owings Mills, MD/Owings Mills) captured the title in their weight classes to lead the Johns Hopkins wrestling team to a fourth place finish at the Centennial Conference Championship. It is the first time the Blue Jays have had two Centennial Conference Champions and NCAA qualifiers in the same season.
Merchant Marine Academy captured the team title, breaking Ursinus' streak of five straight titles. The Bears finished second while Stevens Institute of Technology was third.
Below is a look at Hopkins' top performers on the day:
Stanley: He earned the fourth seed at 165-pounds for the championship and opened his tournament by facing Patrick Doherty, the fifth seed from Gettysburg. Stanley recorded a major decision, 14-5 over Doherty. Facing the number one seed, Vince Renaut of Merchant Marine, Stanley recorded a pin in 6:48 for the upset. In the championship bout, he recorded a 7-1 decision over the number two seed, Anthony Boniello of Washington & Lee.
Fishel: He earned the number one seed at 184-pounds and was looking to defend his Centennial Conference title from last year. Fishel opened his action with a pin in :34 seconds over Drew Wolenter of Gettysburg. He followed this up with a 7-5 decision over Matt Horn of Muhlenberg. Horn had been the four seed in the tournament. Fishel captured his second straight Centennial Conference title with a 4-1 decision over Troy McGuinness of Merchant Marine Academy.
Akshay Paintal (Lexington, MA/Phillips Academy): The freshman opened his first Centennial Conference tournament with a tech fall victory over Tim Hall of McDaniel at 125-pounds. Paintal then dropped a 15-2 major decision to Jordan Alfaro of Merchant Marine Academy, the number two seed. In the consolation bracket, he picked up a victory by pin in 2:27 over Dan McEnroy of Muhlenberg. In the third place bout, Paintal lost on a pin in 1:43 to Kyle Brisson of Stevens Tech.
Tyler Schmidt (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's): Schmidt was the second seed at 197-pounds for the tournament. He opened with a 7-2 decision over Justin Galati of Stevens Tech. He then dropped a 14-5 major decision Harry Keyser, the three seed from Ursinus. Schmidt rebounded with a tech fall over John Christopher, the fifth seed from Washington & Lee. In the third place bout, he dropped a 4-2 decision to Ferris Bond, the fourth seed from McDaniel.
Stanley and Fishel will now compete in the NCAA Championships on March 7 and 8 in Cedar Falls, IA.
