2009 Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships
WESTMINSTER, MD - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team closed the 2008-09 season with an eighth-place finish at the Centennial Conference Championships at McDaniel College on Saturday. The Blue Jays accumulated 19 points on the strength of a second place finish by senior Tyler Schmidt and fourth-place finishes by sophomore Eric Levenseller and freshman Hector Cintron. The Merchant Marine Academy won six individual championships, had eight of its 10 wrestlers in the finals and totaled 116 points to easily outdistance second-place Ursinus (66 points).
Schmidt drew the number two seed in the 197-pound weight class and opened with a 1-0 victory over Muhlenberg's Bill Sholly in the quarterfinals and followed that with a 2-0 win over third-seeded Val Riazanov of Stevens in the semifinals. Schmidt took top-seeded Eric Vincent of the Merchant Marine Academy to the limit before falling 7-6. It is the second time in his career that Schmidt finished as the Centennial runner-up.
Levenseller, who was unseeded in the 165-pound weight class, upset fourth-seeded Rob Terrin of Washington & Lee in the first round (6-3) before falling to top-seeded Vince Renaut of the Merchant Marine Academy. He added an 8-3 decision over Ursinus' John Whitman in the consolation semifinals before dropping an 8-2 decision to third-seeded Zach Hetrick of McDaniel in the third-place match.
Cintron also posted a 2-2 record at 184 to earn his fourth-place showing. He opened with a 5-3 win over McDaniel's Ryan Dieter before slipping to the consolation bracket with a 5-4 loss to third-seeded Nate Murren of Ursinus. He then scored a 5-2 decision over Stevens' Vince Termini before Dieter pinned him in 1:08 to bring his solid freshman campaign to an end.
Freshman Michael Testa also closed an impressive rookie campaign as he bumped up to the 141-pound weight class for the championships and earned the number three seed. He scored a 10-2 decision over Washington & Lee's Justin Welch before Pat Conrad of Stevens bumped him to the consolation bracket with a 12-4 major decision victory. He was then eliminated by Muhlenberg's Kevin Homan (7-3).
