Hopkins Closes Regular Season by Winning Two of Three Duals at Scranton
Feb. 18, 2012
SCRANTON, PA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team closed out the 2011-12 regular season by winning two of three dual meets at Scranton on Saturday. The Blue Jays fell to NYU, 24-15, to open the day, but rebounded to top Muhlenberg (42-18) and Scranton (45-0) in their final preparation before next Saturday’s Centennial Conference Championships at Gettysburg. The Blue Jays finished the dual-meet portion of their season with a 6-15 record, including a 4-4 mark in the Centennial. The Blue Jays led NYU 12-7 after Matt Fusaro topped Sam Friedfeld, 8-1, but the Violets responded by winning four of the final five bouts and sealed the win with a 9-6 win by Dan Brereton at 285. In addition to Fusaro’s win at 157, the Blue Jays also got wins from Paul Bewak (125), Ray Yagloski (141) and Reid Mosquera (197). Only two matches were actually wrestled in the Hopkins-Muhlenberg match as the Mules are wrestling with a short-handed roster this season, but the match against Scranton saw the Blue Jays win all 10 bouts to pick up the shutout. Bewak opened the match with a pin of Kevin McCall (2:23) and Evan Johnson and Mosquera capped the victory with consecutive first period pins at 197 and 285, respectively. NYU 24, Johns Hopkins 15
