LEXINGTON, VA – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team got a technical fall from freshman Travis Laska at 174, a decision from senior Ben Finelli and forfeits and 197 and 285 to fuel a 33-14 victory at Washington & Lee Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Jays’ record to 3-11 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial Conference, while the Generals fall to 2-16 overall and 0-5 in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays trailed 14-13 after Dan Igel edged Jody Gowen, 4-3, at 165. The Blue Jays took the lead for good as Laska ensured the victory with a 15-0 technical fall of Zan Reed at 174. The technical fall is the first of Laska’s career and he needed just 5:14 to build the 15-point cushion.
After a Paul Bewak forfeit victory for JHU at 125 was followed by a Sam Campbell technical fall victory over JHU’s Michael Koren at 133, the Blue Jays grabbed the momentum with consecutive wins that pushed the 6-3 lead to 13-3. Junior Paul Marcello’s fifth major decision of the season, a 16-3 win over Matt Howell, made it 10-3 and sophomore Henry Stauber followed with a tough 2-1 victory over HT Kotchinian at 149 to give JHU the eight-point lead.
That lead quickly turned into a one-point deficit as David Dennis’s second-period pin of Matt Fusaro made it 13-11 and Igel followed with 4-3 win over Gowen. That set the stage for Laska’s victory and match-ending spree for the Blue Jays.
