Late Run Powers York Past Johns Hopkins, 32-14
BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting York won 6-of-10 bouts, including four by fall, to fuel a 32-14 victory at Johns Hopkins in non-conference wrestling action in Goldfarb Gymnasium Friday night. The Spartans improve to 6-2 on the year, while the Blue Jays suffer their first loss and slip to 3-1.
Late Run Powers Spartans
The match was tied 11-11 after five matches, but the Spartans won four of the final five bouts, including three by fall, to secure the victory. Jackson Drum (165) and Stefanos Karpontinis (285) earned first-period pins and Hassan Alic (197) added a second-period fall to help the Spartans pull away.
Even After Five
Johns Hopkins won three of the first five matches and turned an early 6-0 deficit into an 8-6 lead with back-to-back wins by major decision at 133 (Ricky Cavallo) and 141 (Lucas Escobar). Cavallo’s 12-0 win over Zachary Dwyer was his team-leading 15th bonus-point victory of the season, while Escobar followed by topping Eric Schreck, 12-3, to give the Blue Jays the 8-6 lead.
Reyes, Morales Add Victories
After York took an 11-8 lead with a technical fall victory at 149, Blue Jay freshman Dominic Reyes pulled the Blue Jays even at 11-11 with a 7-2 victory over Eric Hutchinson that saw him score two takedowns and two escapes in the third period. Senior Isaac Morales added the Blue Jays’ other victory on the night – his team-leading 23rd of the season – at 184 as he decisioned Frankie Krauss, 9-2, to improve to 23-9.
Johns Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 20 as the Blue Jays welcome Ursinus and Muhlenberg to Goldfarb Gymnasium. Washington & Lee will also compete in the Centennial quad, although the Blue Jays and Generals will not wrestle.
