Nov. 11, 2008

BRIDGEPORT, PA - Johns Hopkins water polo seniors Alex Bond (North Wales, PA/Germantown Academy) and Chris Hutchens (Granite Bay, CA/Bellarmine Prep) have been named Southern Division Co-Players of the Week by the CWPA. In addition, freshman Mark Strickland (Houston, TX/Strake Jesuit) was named the Southern Division Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

The trio led Hopkins to a third place finish at the 2008 Southern Championship last weekend, the Blue Jays second straight top-three finish at the championship. The win assured Hopkins of a trip to the Eastern Championship Nov. 21-23 at Navy.

Bond scored one goal and notched three assists with four ejections drawn in an 11-7 opening round win over Mercyhurst College. Besides his offense, Bond's most notable contribution came on defense as he held Peter Schonhoff, the 11th leading scorer in the nation, scoreless in the contest.

In the next round, he added two assists with two ejections drawn in a 16-6 loss to #14 Navy, before helping Hopkins end an eight-match losing streak to 20th-ranked Bucknell University with a goal and three assists. Against the Bison, he held Richie Hyden, the third best scorer in the nation, to just two goals. The Blue Jays clinched the No. 3 South seed for the Eastern Championship with the win. On the season, Bond has scored 21 goals to go with 39 assists, 21 steals and 21 ejections drawn. His 39 assists are tops on the team, while his 60 points are fourth best.

The Blue Jays' goalie, Hutchens made 30 saves in 96 minutes of work over the weekend to anchor the Hopkins' defense. Against Bucknell in the third place game, he posted 12 saves with one assist and two steals following nine saves versus Navy and nine saves with a steal against Mercyhurst. Hutchens has recorded 269 saves and a team-best 41 steals so far this season. He entered last week ranked fourth in the nation in saves.

Strickland scored two goals and handed out an assist while drawing four kickouts at the Southern Championship. The award marks Strickland's second Rookie of the Week nod this year as he previously earned the award on September 15.

He scored one goal and added an assist with one kick out drawn against Bucknell. Against Navy in the second round, he scored a goal and drew two kick outs in a 16-6 loss after drawing one kick out in an 11-7 opening round win over Mercyhurst College. On the season, Strickland leads the team with 32 kick outs drawn. He has scored 19 goals to go along with nine assists and seven steals.

Hopkins will take on Brown on Nov. 21 at 12:30 pm in the opening round of the Eastern Championship at Navy. With a win, JHU will advance to take on the winner of the Princeton-MIT first round game. A loss and Hopkins will face the loser of the Princeton-MIT game.
