BRIDGEPORT, PA - Johns Hopkins freshman Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, CA/Sacred Heart Prep) has been named the CWPA Southern Division Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. The rookie notched five goals and three assists to go along with eight steals and five ejections drawn in four games to earn the honor. Whittam previously earned the honor on September 14.
In a 13-8 loss to 18th-ranked Bucknell University, Whittam scored a goal with an assist, two steals and an ejection drawn before contributing a goal, steal and ejection drawn in an 11-5 victory over Iona College. Against 17th-ranked Princeton University, he tacked on a goal with three steals and a pair of ejections drawn before concluding his weekend with pairs of goals and assists with one ejection drawn in an 11-10 loss to 15th-ranked United States Air Force Academy.
Whittam ranks second on the team in goals (35) and points (46). He leads the team in ejections drawn (45) and is fourth in steals (27). His 35 goals are the most by a JHU rookie since Peter Davis scored 42 in 2005.
Hopkins returns to action this weekend at the 2009 Division III Eastern Championships hosted by Washington & Jefferson. The Blue Jays, the defending champions, will take on Connecticut College in their opening match, Saturday, October 24 at 10:45 am. Hopkins will then face Penn State Behrend (3:15 pm) and Washington & Jefferson (7:00 pm). The third place match is set for 10:00 am Sunday, October 25, with the championship match to follow at 11:15 am. Hopkins has won 11 DIII Eastern titles, more than any other school, since the tournament began in 1991.
