Ivanov, Wilson Honored by Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference

BRIDGEPORT, PA – Johns Hopkins senior John Wilson and freshman Nico Ivanov have been honored by the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) for their performances last weekend at the Harvard Invitational and the Division III Eastern Championship.

Wilson led Hopkins at the Harvard Invitational and to the Blue Jays’ 17th Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Eastern Championship over the weekend with 56 saves, three assists, and three. This is Wilson’s third Defensive Player of the Week honor from the MAWPC this season.

Wilson secured 10 saves in a 13-9 loss to 14th-ranked Harvard on Friday night, followed by 13 saves, three assists, and a steal in a narrow 10-9 loss to 15th-ranked Brown on Saturday morning. In the final game of the Harvard Invitational, Wilson made eight saves in another close battle, an 11-9 loss to 19th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer.

During the CWPA Division III Eastern Championships, Wilson began with seven saves, while allowing just two goals in the first half against Washington & Jefferson, a game which the Blue Jays would go on to win, 13-3. In the Championship game, he totaled 18 saves and two steals, including a game-sealing save on a five-meter shot with 13 seconds remaining, to lead JHU to victory over top-seeded MIT, 11-10.

Ivanov led Johns Hopkins offensively with 12 goals, one assist, three steals, and one block at the Harvard Invitational and CWPA Division III Eastern Championships. This is the first weekly honor of Ivanov’s career.

Ivanov scored a goal and added a steal while drawing one ejection in a close 10-9 loss to the Bears on Saturday morning. In the Division III Eastern Championship, Ivanov also scored a goal while adding a steal and a drawn ejection in a 13-3 win over Washington & Jefferson. In the next game, Ivanov tallied a then career-high four goals along with an assist and two drawn ejections in a 15-8 win against Connecticut College.

Ivanov led the Blue Jays with five goals, one steal, one block, and three drawn ejections en route to an 11-10 victory over MIT in the Division III Eastern Championship Game. For his efforts, Ivanov was named the Rookie of the Tournament.
