2012 Johns Hopkins Water Polo Season Preview
Aug. 31, 2012
The 2012 Blue Jays return almost their entire starting line up from last year with the graduation of only one senior Mark Strickland. Hopkins does return three All-Americans in seniors Alex Whittam and Ross Schofield and sophomore goalie Danny Ovelar. Whittam, Schofield and classmate Kielan Crow will captain the 2012 Blue Jays as they seek their 14th Division III Eastern Championship as well as the program’s first ever Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship. Hopkins also welcomes in six freshmen, as the Blue Jays will field one of the deepest teams under head coach Ted Bresnahan, now in his 22nd season. Whittam, a three-time All-American, is Hopkins active leader with 172 career goals, 125 assists and 148 steals. While Schofield earned First Team All-America honors after a break out season in 2011. He and Whittam finished with 72 goals apiece to lead an offense that averaged more than 11 goals per game. Crow finished a close third with a career-high 62 goals, as he nearly doubled his career total last season and now has 134 career goals. The trio got help on the offensive end from Stephen Kingery (14 goals, 27 assists), Johnny Beal (32 goals, 26 assists) and Wes Hopkins (34 goals, 27 assists) in 2011. Hopkins also grabbed 38 steals, to lead all freshmen, and had a team-best 16 blocks a year ago. Leading the defense will be Ovelar, who earned Honorable Mention All-America honors last season. He finished the season ranked in the top five, across all divisions, in saves with 278. He also swiped a team-best 81 steals and dished out six assists. He will get some help in the cage from freshman Eric Henrikson, a high school All-American from Laguna Beach.
Hopkins opens the 2012 campaign on Saturday, September 1 at the annual Navy Labor Day Open. JHU will face Cerritos College (12:10 pm) and Lindenwood (4:50 pm) on Saturday at Scott Natatorium. On Sunday, also at Scott Natatorium, JHU faces Gannon (2:10 pm) and Mt. San Antonio (7:00 pm). |
