The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team beat Washington & Jefferson and Connecticut College in pool play at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Eastern Championship Saturday.
How it Happened Washington & Jefferson
Hopkins jumped out to a five-goal lead in the game's opening six minutes, on the strength of two goals from freshman Oscar Goodell. Ian Geister ended the Blue Jays' run and opened the second quarter with a goal for the Presidents.
The Blue Jays answered with another five-goal run, with goals from five different players, as they pushed out to a 10-1 lead with 5:07 to go in the third. Ethan Moy got Washington & Jefferson on the board with its second goal at the 3:32-mark in the third.
Hopkins came back with goals from freshmen John Murphy and Stephen Schmidt and senior Jono Gillette to go up 13-2 just 1:11 into the fourth quarter. Geister would get another for the Presidents at 5:28, but that would do it for the scoring.
How it Happened Connecticut College
The teams traded blows throughout the first eight minutes and Hopkins held a 4-3 lead at the end of one quarter after back-to-back goals from freshman Nico Ivanov.
Ivanov picked up where he left off, completing his hat trick just 39 seconds into the second to push Hopkins' lead to 5-3. Gillette and junior Ryan Masi followed with goals and the Blue Jays' lead was four with 6:09 to play in the half.
Stephan Cress converted a five-meter shot with 2:59 to play to make it a 7-4 game. The Blue Jays answered with goals from Ivanov, junior Giorgio Cico and Gillette to push out to a 10-4 lead at the 4:32-mark of the third.
Senior Connor Johnson, Murphy and Schmidt opened the fourth quarter with three straight goals and Hopkins led 13-4 with 6:18 to go. Arturo Freitas scored three straight for the Camels and it was 13-7 just two and a half minutes later. Freshman Olin Shipstead and Schmidt would tack on two more before a late goal from Dylan Pinckert to close out the scoring.

Hopkins improves to 71-8 all-time in the Division III Eastern Championship and will play in the title game for the 25th time. The Blue Jays are 16-8 in the championship game.
Hopkins takes on host MIT in the championship game of the CWPA Division III Eastern Championship. The match is slated for a 12:15 start at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool.
