Junior Laura Paulsen and senior Adam Waddell of the Johns Hopkins track & field squad head to Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio to compete in the NCAA outdoor track & field championships. Paulsen will run in the 5,000 meter race, while Waddell will take on the decathlon.
Paulsen owns the best 5,000 meter time in the nation at 16:50.75 from the Penn Relays on April 23. Her time from the Penn Relays broke the school and Centennial Conference records in the event. The junior has the opportunity to be the first individual NCAA champion since 2003, when Kathy Darling won the discus. Paulsen was a two-time All-American at the indoor NCAA Championships with her seventh place finish in the one mile. She was the anchor of the seventh-place women's distance medley relay team for her second All-American honor. Paulsen won the 10,000 meter at the Centennial Conference championship along with her third place finish in the 5,000 meter and her fifth place performance in the 800 meter. She was named Co-Track Outstanding Performer of the championship.
Senior Adam Waddell goes into the NCAA Championship after coming off of his most impressive decathlon performance yet, as he won eight of the 10 events in the decathlon at the Centennial Conference championships. Waddell scored 6,450 points to break the school record in the event and was named Co-Field Outstanding Performer of the meet.
Waddell begins competition at 12 p.m. on Thursday and the decathlon continues into Friday. Paulsen will run the 5,000 meter at 4:20 p.m. on Saturday.
