Van Allen, Carey & Bartnett Earn Centennial's Top Honors
May 12, 2014
LANCASTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins men’s track & field team took home a host of honors this week after winning its first-ever Centennial Conference Outdoor Championship on May 4. Senior Andrew Carey was named the conference’s outstanding track performer, while freshman Andrew Bartnett earned his second selection as the Centennial’s Outstanding Rookie of the Year. After being named the coach of the year at the conclusion of the indoor season, Bobby Van Allen again earned the honor after leading the Blue Jays to their first-ever outdoor conference title during his tenure.
Carey has compiled one of the finest seasons ever by a Hopkins track & field athlete in 2013-14, and added to his multitude of honors with Centennial Conference titles in the 800m, 1500m and 4x400 events. Carey is currently ranked second in the nation in the 800 meter run (1:50.12) and fourth in the 1500 meter (3:48.34), and will one of several athletes representing Hopkins at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Delaware, OH.
Bartnett will also be included in that pool of athletes, as the St. Louis, MO native remains tied for first in the nation in the pole vault after clearing 5.00 meters (16’4.75”) on April 4. Bartnett was named the Centennial Rookie of the Year earlier this season after winning the pole vault at the conference’s indoor championships, and successfully defended his title at Swarthmore with a meet-record leap of 4.75 meters (15’7.00”).
Van Allen completed the sweep of men’s coaching honors in the Centennial Conference in 2013-14, being voted the men’s COTY for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. The Hopkins track & field teams completed arguably the greatest year in the history of the programs as both the men and women claimed all six conference titles.
