CHESTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins track & field team competed at the Widener Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Widener University. The Blue Jays posted back-to-back wins in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in the men's and women's events. Peter Li also claimed the discus competition.

Brian Rooney finished ninth in the 5,000 meter at 15:30.90 as the top Blue Jay in the event. Mira Patel placed fourth in the event for the women at 18:06.31. Sophomore Christina Valerio also posted a top-ten performance in the 5,000 meter, running an 18:46.73 for eighth place.

The women's 4x100 meter relay team (Alison Smith, Paula Osborn, Paulina Goodman, Jordan Ireton) finished second in a field of six with a 50-second flat performance. The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Kit Harris, Cassie Cummings, Elizabeth Laseter and Lindsey Kent won the event in 4:15.21. The men's team of Steve Sihelnik, Chris DeLaiglesia, Brandon Hahn and Derek Hsu placed third with a time of 3:28.99.
 

 

Cassie Cummings placed seventh in the 1,500 meter with her time of 4:57.40.

Dan White finished first in his heat of the 110 hurdles in 16.84. John Bartolotta placed first in his heat of the 100 meter dash as well, clocking in at 11.72.

Senior Paula Osborn placed third in the 400 meter at 58.46. James Walker led a pack of seven Hopkins runners in the 400 meter, finishing in 51.76.

Jordan Ireton claimed third place in the 800 meter at 2:19.05, leading teammate Cassie Cummings, who placed seventh at 2:29.18. Elliott Wehner won his heat of the 800 meter, running a 1:57.58.

In the 200 meter, Osborn won her heat at 25.69 while Jonathan Walker finished in 22.98 for the best male performance in the event.

Mary O'Grady won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 11:57.53, leading teammates Cecilia Furlong (12:07.62) and Elizabeth Laseter (12:32.38). David Sigmon won the event as well, clocking in at 10:07.53, ahead of Michael Yuan who placed second in 10:11.29.

Matt Stankiewicz was the only Blue Jay in the long jump, finishing with a 5.77 meter leap.

Ryan Lino bested teammate Peter Li in the shot put for the first time in the outdoor season. Lino threw 14.03 meters, while Li tossed it 13.84. Li went on to win the discus with a 42.68 meter hurl. Luke Sand placed second in the discus with a 41.58 meter throw.

Freshman Stephanie Amalfe broke the school record in the heptathlon at Messiah over the weekend with her 3,474 points scored. Amalfe placed fourth overall out of 16 competitors in her first heptathlon. Amalfe finished the 100 meter hurdles in 17.74, the 200 meter run at 28.78 and the 800 in 2:42.61. In the field events, the freshman threw 10/47 meters in the shot put, and 26.82 meters in the javelin. Amalfe jumped 1.33 meters in the high jump and 4.50 meters in the long jump for a fourth place overall finish.

Senior Kathy Horn also competed in the heptathlon, finished with 3,317 points in sixth place overall. Horn ran her 100 meter hurdle race in 18.59, the 200 meter in 28.27 and the 800 meter in 2:42.20. In the shot put, Horn threw 8.24 meters, while tossing the javelin 27.31 meters. The senior jumped 1.37 meters in the high jump and 4.42 meters in the long jump.

The Blue Jays return to action on April 23 and 24 for the Penn Relays.
