LANDOVER, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's indoor track and field teams opened the 2002-03 season at the University of Maryland Invitational on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Center. Competing without a full squad, the Blue Jays had several impressive results and the freshmen performed well in their first collegiate event.

Junior Megan Carr led the women as she tied her varsity pole vault record with a mark of 8'6". It was her first opportunity to vault over a bar this season. Junior Heather Blair had a dominant performance in the mile run as she won her section by over 10 seconds with a time of 5:26.93. Sophomore Maureen Kimsey placed sixth in the mile at a 5:43.15 pace.

Senior Nikki Gross posted a solid season-opening mark in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:32.97, while junior Laura Vernikoff was the top Division III finisher, and seventh overall, in the 5k run with a personal-best time of 19:50.54. It was her first race since her freshman year as she was sidelined with an injury last season.

Freshman Nick Sousa established a freshman record for the 5,000-meter run as he placed second in his section with an impressive time of 16:04.02. In the other section of the 5,000-meter run, junior Steven Chu was fourth with a time of 15:52.56, while senior John Onofrey finished sixth at a 16:03.73 pace.

Freshman Ilolochika Emuh narrowly missed the school record in the 60-meter dash as she posted a time of 8.29, but Shane Olaleye set a JHU freshman mark in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:05.79. Derrick Norgriff set a freshman record in the shot put by more than two feet with a throw of 37'3.25".

The Blue Jays return to action Saturday, January 4 as Hopkins travels to Landover, Maryland for the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland.
