MARIETTA, OH - Johns Hopkins senior Adam Waddell (Altoona, PA/Altoona) sits in 10th place in a 17-person field in the decathlon after the first day of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Track and Field Championships. Waddell, whose stronger events come on the second day of competition, totaled 3,442 points through the first five events and is on pace to shatter his own school record in the event. He totaled a school-record 6,450 points by winning eight of 10 events in the decathlon at the 2009 Centennial Conference Championships. He is currently 107 points ahead of that record-setting pace.

Waddell used a third-place showing in the shot put (43' 1.5") and an eighth-place finish in the high jump (6' ¾") to fuel his effort on the first day of the NCAA Championships. He also placed 12th in the 400-meter dash (51.77), 13th in the 100-meter dash (11.49) and 15th in the long jump (19' 11.75") to amass his 3,442 points. He bettered his marks from his Centennial Conference-winning performance in four of the five events.

Waddell currently sits 16 points out of ninth place and 95 points out of eighth place. The top eight finishers earn All-America honors.

Competition continues on Friday with the first of five events (110 meter hurdles) scheduled to start at 11 am. The remaining four events (discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500-meter run) continue throughout the afternoon with the 1500-meter run scheduled to wrap up competition just before 5 pm.
