Hopkins Competes at Widener Invitational April 21, 2003
CHESTER, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Widener Invitational this past weekend and posted several solid results, including many season-best marks. There was no team scoring at the meet.
The Blue Jays were led once again by senior Quinlan Amos (Houston, TX) on the men's side and senior Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) for the women. Amos finished in the top 10 in three events, including fourth in the 200-meter dash with a school record time of 21.81. He broke his own mark of 22.07 set earlier this season at the University of Maryland Invitational and was just .01 seconds off the NCAA qualifying time. Amos also placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.97 and was 10th in the long jump with a mark of 19.38'.
Darling won both the discus and javelin for the fourth time in five meets this season. She posted a season-best mark of 144.38' in the javelin and won the discus with a throw of 153.99'.
The Blue Jay men recorded three additional top 10 finishes on the day. Senior Dave Courson (Westfield, VT/North Country Union) was third in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 34:29.88, freshman Tai Kobayashi (Rolling Hills, CA/Phillips Exeter Academy) placed sixth in the high jump with a season-best mark of 6'0", and the 4x400 relay team finished fifth out of 12 schools with a season-best time of 3:31.47.
Senior John Onofrey (Needham, MA/Needham) posted a season-best time of 15:19.81 in the 5,000-meter run to finish 16th in a field of 48. Freshman Shane Olaleye (Fordham Prep) rounded out the top finishers for the men as he placed 17th out of 34 in the 400-meter dash at a season-best pace of 52.93.
Freshman Ilolochika Emuh (Highland, CA/Redlands) recorded a top-10 finish for the women as she was second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.89, just .07 seconds off her best of the season. Sophomores Maureen Kimsey (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) and Hannah Bracken (Monterey, MA/Mt. Everett) also performed well for the women. Kimsey was 16th in a field of 43 in the 1,500-meter run with a season-best time of 5:08.17, while Bracken placed 12th out of 25 in the 400-meter dash at a season-best 1:03.94 pace.
The Blue Jays return to action Thursday and Friday as Hopkins competes in the Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania.
