COLLEGE PARK, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's track and field team finished an impressive sixth out of 13 schools at the 2003 University of Maryland Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Jays totaled 50 points to tie Montclair State University for the sixth spot, and were just 1.5 points behind Essex Community College for fifth place.

Howard University was first was first with 114 total points, while the University of Maryland was second with 88 points, American University placed third with 73.5 points and Long Island University finished fourth with 70 total points.

Senior Quinlan Amos (Houston, TX) recorded 12 points on the day for the Blue Jays as he finished in the top 10 in three events. Amos set a school record in the 200-meter dash and placed sixth with a time of 22.07 for four points. He also finished fifth to record six points in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.24 and was eighth in the long jump with a mark of 5.82 meters for an additional two points.
 

 

Senior John Onofrey (Needham, MA/Needham) and sophomore Eric Scrivner (Bigfork, MN/Bigfork) also score for Hopkins in the running events. Onofrey totaled four points in the 1,500-meter run as he placed fifth with a season-best time of 4:02.19. Scrivner was seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and recorded two points with a time of 11:17.72.

Several Blue Jays scored in the field events led by freshmen John Stowe (Madison, WI/St. Paul's School) and Derrick Norgriff (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) who both tallied points in two events. Stowe earned five points as he finished 11th in the shot put with a mark of 10.73 meters and was fifth in the javelin with a throw of 40.45 meters. Norgriff was seventh in the shot put with a mark of 12.31 meters and eighth in the discus with a throw of 33.29 meters.

Junior Justin Leck (Washington, KS/Washington) earned six points in the javelin as he placed third with a mark of 41.92 meters, while freshman Ted Esborn (Cleveland, OH/Saint Ignatius) also earned six points as he finished third in the pole vault with a mark of 3.53 meters.

Freshman Tai Kobayashi (Rolling Hills, CA/Phillips Exeter Academy) placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.77 meters to earn five points, while junior Ben Stopper (Reinholds, PA/Conrad Weiser) was sixth in the long jump with a mark of 6.29 meters for four points.

The Blue Jays return to action on Tuesday as Hopkins travels to McDaniel College for the 2003 Twilight Meet.
