BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the UMBC "Big Dawg Invitational" last Saturday. The Blue Jays competed against several Division I schools, including UMBC, Coppin State, Bucknell, American, Delaware State and Wagner.

On the women's side, senior Kathy Darling (Milford, DE/Milford) picked up where she left off last season as she won the discus and javelin. Darling, who earned All-America honors last year after finishing second in the javelin and discus at the NCAA Championships, won the javelin with a throw of 138'9" to outdistance the field by over 15 feet. She then won the discus with a mark of 148'8.25".

Freshman Ilolochika Emuh (Highland, CA/Redlands) had an excellent performance as she broke the school record in the 100-meter hurdles. Emuh qualified for the final by placing third in her heat with a time of 15.82 to break the previous record of 16.65 set by Africa Smith in 1994. Emuh then finished sixth in the final with a time of 16.25.
 

 

Also performing well were sophomore Jessica Bylander (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) and senior Ly-Lan Wisler (Bridgewater, NJ/Peddie School). Bylander placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.56, while Wisler was fourth in the 5,000-meter run at a 19:47.87 pace.

Senior Quinlan Amos (Houston, TX) performed well for the men in the 100- and 200-meter dash. Amos was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.89, just .05 seconds off the school record. He was also second in his heat in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.27, which was .09 seconds off his school record.

Freshman Sean Morgan (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) also competed in the 200-meter dash and finished second in his heat with a time of 24.44. Senior John Onofrey (Needham, MA/Needham) placed fourth in his heat of the 1,500-meter run with a solid time of 4:07.87.
