Men's Track Places Sixth at Centennial Championships March 3, 2003
COLLEGEVILLE, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's indoor track and field team finished sixth out of nine schools at the 2003 Centennial Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday and Sunday.
The Blue Jays totaled 53 points to place 13 points behind McDaniel for fifth place. Haverford won its fourth straight Centennial title and ninth in 10 years with 161 total points, while Muhlenberg was second with 130 points. Gettysburg and Dickinson rounded out the top five with 77.5 and 73.5 points, respectively.
Senior Quinlan Amos (Houston, TX) led the Blue Jays as he totaled 22 points in three events. Amos earned 10 points by winning the 55-meter dash and broke his school record in the event with a time of 6.53. He set the previous record of 6.54 at the Ursinus Invitational on February 8. Amos then scored eight points in the 200-meter dash as he placed second at a 22.76 pace. He then was fifth in the long jump with a mark of 20'8" for four points.
Senior John Onofrey (Needham, MA/Needham) recorded five points for JHU as he finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:56.45. The time was his second fastest of the season. Freshman Nick Sousa (Foxboro, MA) placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run and earned two points at a 15:53.35 pace.
Also gaining points in the field events were freshmen Nick Culbertson (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian), Tai Kobayashi (Rolling Hills, CA/Phillips Exeter Academy) and Derrick Norgriff (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield). Culbertson earned five points as he recorded a season-best mark of 6'0.5" in the high jump to finish fourth. Kobayashi was sixth in the high jump with a mark of 5'10.5", while Norgriff placed sixth in the shot put and gained three points with a throw of 41'6.5".
The 4x800 and distance medley relay teams each finished fourth and earned five points with times of 8:18.18 and 10:58.84, respectively.
