Hopkins Finishes Sixth at Centennial Championships Feb. 24, 2002
HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's indoor track and field team finished sixth out of nine schools at the 2002 Centennial Conference Championships this weekend. The Blue Jays totaled 63 points, just one point out of fifth place and 10 points out of third place. Haverford College ran away with the title with 205.5 total points.
Junior Quinlan Amos led Hopkins with top-three finishes in the 55-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the long jump. Amos won the 200-meter dash by 0.2 seconds with a time of 22.78. He finished second in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.58, just 0.06 seconds out of first place. Amos then took third in the long jump with a mark of 21' 1 *" (6.44m).
Several other Blue Jays performed well, including junior Rajeev Mahajan, who outdistanced the field in the high jump with a mark of 6' 4 *" (1.95m). Mahajan was the only competitor to pass the 6' mark. Senior John Apperson took seventh in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.54, while freshman Matt Campbell was ninth in the 400-meter dash at a 52.30 pace.
JHU recorded four more top-10 finishes on the day. Senior Moky Cheung finished eighth in the shot put with a mark of 41' 1" (12.52m), sophomore Ben Stopper was eighth in the long jump with a jump of 19'8 *" (6.01m), and junior Brian Nichols was fourth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.15. Brian Wolcott recorded a mark of 13'1" in the pole vault to take fifth place.
The relay teams performed very well on the day for Hopkins, setting records in three races. Amos, Campbell, Stopper, and freshman Jesse Fulton combined for a record-setting time of 1:36.06 in the 4x200 relay. Campbell and Fulton joined Apperson and sophomore Alex Gochal in the 4x400 relay and recorded a time of 3:32.88 to break the school-record by three seconds. The distance medley relay team chopped almost 10 seconds off the school record as junior Jamie Parks, Campbell, Gochal, and Apperson combined for a time of 10:36.94 to finish in second place.
