Dec. 3, 2004

BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team has been ranked No. 17 in the ITA Division III Atlantic South Region, as announced Dec. 1. The Blue Jay men's team went 5-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference last spring, ending the season with five consecutive wins, while the women went 7-4 overall and 7-3 in league play.

Freshman Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) earned a No. 25 ranking in regional singles and a No. 11 ranking in doubles with senior Justin Belisario (Los Angeles, CA/Loyola).

Leading the teams this year is first-year Hopkins coach Chuck Willenborg, who comes from Division II Barry University, where he led the men's team to the NCAA Finals and the women's team to its first-ever Sunshine State Conference Championship.

Willenborg, an adjunct professor in the school of professional studies and education at Hopkins, also coached the top 10-ranked University of Miami tennis teams from 1989-95 and was a member of the Big East Tennis Committee. He then moved to Pepperdine University, where he coached the nationally-ranked Waves tennis teams.
