BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins sophomore David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) earned All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the second straight season in 2008. He finished the season ranked ninth in the nation with a 24-5 singles record. The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team closed out the season ranked 19th in the nation and fourth in the Atlantic South by the ITA.
Named the Division III Player to Watch by the ITA earlier this season, Maldow is the only player in school history to earn All-America honors. With just two seasons under his belt, he ranks fourth in career singles wins (42), just 10 shy of tying the school record. He ranks sixth in career doubles wins (33) and fifth in total wins (75). Maldow's 24 singles wins in 2008 are a school record as he became the first player in program history to eclipse 20 wins in a season.
Hopkins posted a 15-6 record in 2008 en route to its second straight Centennial Conference title. The Blue Jays made their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance, falling in the second round. Hopkins went undefeated in the Centennial Conference for the second consecutive season and has won 20 straight regular season conference matches.
Senior Joe Vasoontara (Bangkok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) and freshman Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/Saint Xavier) ended the season ranked 16th in doubles in the final ITA poll. The pair was also ranked third in the region. Vasoontara and Blythe posted a 18-8 record in doubles together. The duo was the first in JHU history to earn a bid to the NCAA Doubles Championship and they nearly pulled off a stunning upset before falling to the second-seeded team in the first round of the tournament.
