June 17, 2009
BALTIMORE, MD - Tripp Weber (Blue Bell, PA/Germantown Academy), a 2009 graduate of Johns Hopkins University and former co-captain of the men's tennis team, has received the prestigious Annenberg Fellowship. Weber will serve as an American ambassador at England's Eton College during the 2009-2010 academic year. The Annenberg Fellowship was established by Walter H. Annenberg, a U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James and provides a stipend for a graduate of an American college or university to spend one academic year at Eton College. Fellows have some teaching duties that are based on their own studies, as well as in American literature, history or current affairs. In addition, they are also asked to coach. Weber is the first recipient from Johns Hopkins in the 24-year history of the program, of which past participants have included graduates of Yale, MIT, Harvard, Princeton and Stanford. Eton College is situated just across the Thames River from Windsor Castle. Established in 1440 by King Henry VI, Eton is an independent boarding school for boys aged 13 to 19. Its graduates have included royalty and prominent leaders in politics, medicine and law. Weber graduated in May from Johns Hopkins with a degree in international relations, including a minor in entrepreneurship and management. A Dean's List student and ITA Scholar-Athlete, he graduated with a 3.50 GPA. A co-captain of the JHU tennis team in his senior year, he helped the Blue Jays to a 16-4 record. Hopkins won its third straight Centennial Conference title, going a perfect 9-0 in conference play, and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2009. In his four years, JHU posted a 61-22 (.735) record, including a 32-2 (.941) mark in Centennial Conference matches, and made four straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Weber finished his career with a 21-2 record in singles and a 19-5 record in doubles. He holds the program record for career win percentage in singles (.913) and total win percentage (.851). Weber won the B2 Singles Draw at the 2008 ITA Southeast Regional, winning all four of his matches in straight sets. He also advanced to the finals of the BI Doubles Draw at the ITA Regional.
In addition to his work on the court, Weber was a teaching assistant in the Department of International Relations as well as a student advisor for incoming Johns Hopkins freshmen. He was also the Rush Chair of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. |
