BALTIMORE, MD -
The Johns Hopkins women's and men's tennis teams have been ranked ninth and tenth, respectively, in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Rankings, announced this month. The Blue Jays compete in the Atlantic South Region, which is led by Emory and Washington & Lee in both the men's and women's rankings.
Freshman Chanont Vasoontara was the only Hopkins player to be ranked individually, earning a 21st-place slot in the singles rankings.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Chuck Willenborg, the Johns Hopkins tennis program had it's most successful season in recent history. The men's team, with six freshmen on its 14-player roster, went 13-2 overall and 8-0 in the Centennial Conference, winning its first-ever conference championship. Until then, no team besides Washington College had ever won the title; in fact, the Shoremen were undefeated in the conference until the Blue Jays defeated them 4-3 this year. Meanwhile the women's team set the school record for league wins in a season, posting an 8-2 conference mark and finishing 13-3 overall.
