BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins men's tennis junior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) and sophomore Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) have been selected to compete in the 2009 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships. The individual championships, consisting of 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams, will be held May 22-24 at the Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont, CA.
Maldow is making his third straight appearance at the NCAA Singles Championship and his first at the doubles competition. The 2009 Centennial Conference Player of the Year and a two-time All-American, he is Hopkins career leader in singles wins (59) and total wins (109). Maldow is 17-4 this season in singles and is ranked third in the Atlantic South and 10th in the nation. He advanced to the second round of the singles competition last season before falling in three sets.
Wang, ranked fourth in the Atlantic South, is 20-2 this season in singles and has won 15 straight matches. He is the first player in program history to post back-to-back 20-win seasons after going 20-7 as a freshman. Wang, a 2009 First Team All-Centennial Conference selection in singles and doubles, ranks in the top five in program history in singles (40) and doubles (39) wins.
Maldow and Wang have posted a 17-6 record in doubles this season and have won eight straight matches. The duo, ranked second in the region and 11th in the nation, won the ITA Southeast Regional in October, the first ITA regional championship in program history. Maldow and Wang went on to finish sixth at the ITA National Small College Championships and earned All-America honors.
