Feb. 14, 2017

LANCASTER, PA – The Johns Hopkins men’s tennis team earned 81 points and nine first-place votes to earn the top spot in the 2017 Centennial Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Blue Jays have won 11 straight Centennial Conference Championships and 12 overall since 2005.

Hopkins avenged its only regular season conference loss by beating Swarthmore, 5-1, in the conference championship match. Swarthmore is picked to finish second in the preseason poll with one first-place vote and 73 points. Haverford (60 points), Franklin & Marshall (58 points) and Washington College (44 points) round out the top five.

Hopkins went 19-6 in 2016, won its 11th consecutive conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Blue Jays’ season ended in a heart-breaking 5-4 loss to the eventual national champion Bowdoin Bears.

Hopkins returns a trio of All-Americans from last year’s squad in seniors Mike Buxbaum, Jeremy Dubin and Emerson Walsh. Hopkins is ranked 16th in the Oracle/ITA National Poll and open the season on February 26 at 38th-ranked Washington & Lee.
