FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Senior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho), the number one seed in the 2009 ITA Southeast Regional, has advanced to Monday's semifinal match in the Championship Singles draw. In addition, sophomore Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) and junior Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) advanced to the semifinals of the Championship Doubles draw.

Maldow opened Sunday with a 6-3, 6-0 win over David Lupinetti (Salisbury) to advance to the quarterfinals. There he squared off against seventh-seeded Alex Nemerov (Carnegie Mellon). Maldow won in straight sets again, downing Nemerov, 6-2, 6-3. He will face fourth-seeded Eric Shulman (Carnegie Mellon) at 9:00 am Monday in the semifinals. Maldow has advanced to the semifinals in each of his four seasons and the finals in 2006 and 2008.

Ninth-seeded freshman Will Grist (Charlotte, NC/Heritage Academy (SC)) lost his round of 16 match to Shulman, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Andy Hersh (Valrico, FL/Newsome), seeded fifth, won his first match on Sunday, beating ninth-seeded Gianandrea Heyer (Christopher Newport) in three sets. Hersh won the first set, 6-2, before dropping the second, 6-4. He then took the third set, 7-5, to take the match. He then met Kevin Caulfield (Haverford) in the quarterfinals, falling 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) lost in three sets on Sunday in his round of 16 match to Hayden White (Washington & Lee). Elgort won the first set, 6-4, then lost a tough second set, 7-6 (13-11). White then clinched the match with a 6-1 win in the third set.

Freshman Shaan Bukhari (Plano, TX/Dhahran (Saudi Arabia)) lost his second round consolation match on Sunday morning. He won the first set against Jeremy Becht (Washington & Lee), 7-6. But then fell, 6-3, 10-8 in the second and third. Blythe won his second round consolation match, 6-4, 6-3, over Hailiu Yang (Haverford). Blythe withdrew from his quarterfinals match with Scott Melideo (Scranton).
 

 

Sophomore Michael Chang (Winston Salem, NC/Forsyth County Day School) advanced to the consolation semifinals with a pair of wins Sunday. He won his second round match over Lorenzo Sison (Christopher Newport), 6-4, 6-4. He then beat Ricky Garrett (Grove City), 6-1, 6-1. Chang will face Riley Baver (Mary Washington) in the semifinals on Monday morning.

In the Championship Doubles draw, Elgort and Hersh lost their quarterfinals match to fifth-seeded Nikola Ljuboja and James Muliawan (Carnegie Mellon), 8-6. Third-seeded Barnaby and Blythe won their quarterfinals match over fifth-seeded Andrew Frisk and Evan Goff (Mary Washington), 9-8 (7-3). The duo was set to square off against second-seeded Scott Burtzlaff and Evan Thomas (Salisbury) in the semifinals Sunday evening.

In the Blue 1 Doubles draw, Chang and Grist advanced to the finals. The duo won their semifinals match over Ross Sliverberg and Armen Varten (Franklin & Marshall), 8-6. That set up a championship match with Civan Orhan and Neil Soni (Carnegie Mellon) on Sunday evening.
