FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team saw four players advance to the round of 16 in the Championship Singles draw at the 2009 ITA Southeast Regional Saturday. In addition, the Blue Jays have two doubles teams in the quarterfinals of the Championship Doubles draw.

Senior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho), the top seed in the tournament, opened with a three-set win. He dropped his first set, 6-2, to Sam Wichlin (Mary Washington), but rebound to win the second and third sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Maldow then beat Ravi Raghavan (Carnegie Mellon), 6-1, 6-4 in the second round. He will face David Lupinetti (Salisbury) in the round of 16. Maldow is the first player in program history to be the number one seed at the ITA Regional.

Junior Will Grist (Charlotte, NC/Heritage Academy (SC)), seeded ninth in the tournament, won his first two matches in straight sets to advance to the round of 16. In the opening round, he beat Eric Sundstrom (Mary Washington), 6-3, 6-3. Grist then beat Michael Freeman (Washington & Lee), 6-2, 6-3. He will face fourth-seeded Eric Shulman (Christopher Newport) in the round of 16.

Freshman Andy Hersh (Valrico, FL/Newsome), seeded fifth, won both of his matches on Saturday in straight sets. He opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jonathan Gaffney (Washington & Lee). He then beat Malik Mubeen (Swarthmore, 6-0, 6-3 to advance to a round of 16 match with ninth-seeded Gianandrea Heyer (Christopher Newport).

Sophomore Warren Elgort (New York, NY/Trinity School) won in straight sets in both of his matches on Saturday to advance to the round of 16. He opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Lorenzo Sison (Christopher Newport). He then beat ninth-seeded Jon Spero (Carnegie Mellon), 6-1, 6-3. Elgort will meet sixth-seeded Hayden White (Washington & Lee) in the round of 16 Sunday.
 

 

Sophomore Jacob Barnaby (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista) won his opening round match over Riley Baver (Mary Washington). He lost the first set, 6-2, but rebounded to win the second (6-3) and third (6-3) sets to take the match. He then dropped a second round match to ninth-seeded Scott Burtzlaff (Salisbury), 6-2, 6-3.

Junior Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta), the number two seed, dropped just two games in winning his opening round match over Ricky Garrett (Grove City), 6-1, 6-1. He was then upset in the second round by Daniel Valverde (CU) in three sets. Valverde won the first set, 7-5, but Wang answered with a 6-0 win the second. Valverde then won the third, 6-3, to take the match.

Freshman Shaan Bukhari (Plano, TX/Dhahran (Saudi Arabia)) lost his opening round match to seventh-seeded Alex Nemerov (Carnegie Mellon), 6-2, 6-1. In the consolation draw, he beat Ricky Connor (Christopher Newport), 6-2, 6-4 in the first round. Bukhari will face Jeremy Becht (Washington & Lee) in the second round Sunday. Sophomore Michael Chang (Winston Salem, NC/Forsyth County Day School) lost his opening round match to White, 6-3, 6-2. In the consolation draw, he beat Andrew Frisk (Mary Washington), 6-2, 6-4. Chang will face Sison in the second round on Sunday.

Junior Casey Blythe (Louisville, KY/St. Xavier) lost his opening round match to eighth-seeded Ross Anstaett (Dickinson) in three sets. Anstaett took the first set, 6-3, before Blythe rallied to win the second, 6-4. Anstaett then took the third set, 6-2, to take the match. In the consolation draw, Blythe beat Evan Goff (Mary Washington), 6-3, 6-2 to set up a second round match with Hailiu Yang (Haverford). Senior Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) lost his opening round match to Heyer, 6-4, 7-5. In the consolation draw, he lost is first round match, 6-2, 6-3, to Will Apperson (Mary Washington).

In the Blue 1 Singles draw, freshman Jeffrey Kamei (Downey, CA/Troy) had a bye in the first round and faced Shad Harrell (Hampden-Sydney) in the quarterfinals. He lost, 6-0, 6-1 to Harrell.

In the Championship doubles draw, the Blue Jays had the number one seed for the second time since 2006, in Maldow and Wang. The defending regional champions lost their first round match to Jeremy King and Duke Miller (Carnegie Mellon), 8-4. The pair then lost its consolation round match, 8-6, to Sundstrom and Zach Detweiler (Mary Washington).

Hopkins also has the number three seed in Barnaby and Blythe. The pair won its first round match, 8-4, over Harsha Rao and Jon Spero (Carnegie Mellon). Barnaby and Blythe then beat Daniel Barnas and Andrew Nottage (Salisbury), 8-5. The duo will face fifth-seeded Frisk and Goff on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

Elgort and Hersh advanced to the second round after Mubeen and Zachary Kelm (Swarthmore) withdrew due to injury. The duo then beat fourth-seeded Heyer and Shulman, 9-7, the round of 16. The pair will face fifth-seeded Nikola Ljuboja and James Muliawan (Carnegie Mellon) in the quarterfinals on Sunday. Bukhari and Vale won their first round match, 8-1, over Apperson and Hope (Mary Washington). The pair then lost to fifth-seeded Nemerov and Raghavan, 8-6.

In the Blue 1 Doubles draw, Chang and Grist advanced to the semifinals with a win on Saturday. The pair had a bye in the first round before beating Giorgio Athans and Justin Smith (Salisbury), 8-2, in the quarterfinals. The duo will face Ross Silverberg and Armen Varten (Franklin & Marshall) in the semifinals Sunday.
