Maldow Falls In Finals at ITA Regionals

SALISBURY, MD - Freshman David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho Senior) became the first Johns Hopkins men's tennis player to advance to the championship of the Wilson/ITA Atlantic South Regional. In addition, sophomore Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) and freshman Peter Vale (Haverford, PA/Episcopal Academy) won the B Draw Doubles Championship. Maldow, one of eight players seeded ninth in the draw, lost to another ninth seed in the finals, John James of Mary Washington 6-1, 6-1. On the way to the finals, Maldow defeated two seeded players, including #1 seed Arturo Solis of Washington. Solis was ranked #4 in the nation in the final ITA poll of 2006. He is a two-time All-American and two-time Centennial Conference Player of the Year. In the B Singles Draw, freshman Dan Myers (Chattanooga, TN/Collegiate School) and junior Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) will meet in the finals. In the B Doubles Draw, Wei and Vale won their final two matches by 8-0 scores to win the championship. In the finals, the pair beat Jason Dunn and Eric Sundstrom of Mary Washington. This is the only competition for the Blue Jays this fall. Hopkins will open its spring schedule on Tuesday, March 12 at the Florida Institute of Technology.
