CLAREMONT, CA - Johns Hopkins men's tennis sophomore Andrew Wang (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship on Friday afternoon with a pair of wins. While junior David Maldow (Jericho, NY/Jericho) advanced to the round of 16. In the doubles championship, the pair fell in the first round to the top seed.
In the first round Friday morning, Wang won in straight sets over eighth-seeded Zack Lerner of Amherst, winning 6-1, 6-4. With his first round win, Wang earns All-America honors in singles for the first time in his career. He then prevailed in three sets over Charlie Cutler of Washington University in the second round. Wang won the first set 6-2 before Cutler took the second 7-5. Wang then rebounded to take the third set and the match, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. He is the first player in program history to advance to the quarterfinals.
Maldow picked up a straight sets win in the first round, beating Austin Chafetz of Amherst. He won the first set 6-1 and was up 5-1 in the second before holding off a late rally from Chafetz to win 6-4. Maldow earns All-America honors for the third straight season with his first round win. In the second round, Maldow faced off against third-seeded John Watts of Washington University. Maldow fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
In the first round of the doubles championship, Maldow and Wang were paired against the top-seeded team from Gustavus Adolphus, Mike Burdakin and John Kauss. The teams battled in the first set, needing a tiebreaker to decide it. Burdakin and Kauss won the first set 7-6 (7-3) and then followed with a 6-3 win the second set.
Wang will return to the court on Saturday morning in the quarterfinals, where he will face Ben Stein of Bates College.
