HAVERFORD, PA - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team concluded its season at the 2004 Centennial Conference championships at Haverford College this weekend. Senior Justin Chan (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) highlighted JHU's weekend with a run to the quarterfinals, while the Blue Jays also had one of their two doubles entries advance to the quarterfinals. Below is a recap of JHU's singles and doubles participants in the tournament.

Singles

* Chan was not seeded in the tournament and opened with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Franklin & Marshall's Alex Chester, who had defeated Chan in straight sets during the regular season. Chan then defeated Washington College's Brent Whilser (7-5, 6-3) before falling to Carl Lederman of Haverford, the number three seed, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

* Sophomore Mike Kelly-Sell (Ann Arobor, MI/Pioneer) defeated F&M's Dan Lindenberg, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-2 in the first round before being eliminated by Maciek Prytula of Washington College, 6-3, 6-0. Prytula was the number four seed in the tournament.

* Junior Justin Belisario (Los Angeles, CA/Loyola) drew a tough assignment in the first round and fell to Haverford's Elmar Trust, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Trust later defeated Muhlenberg's Jeff Kraft, the top seed in the tournament.


 

 

Doubles

* Kelly-Sell and senior Grant Roch (Cedarburg, WI/Cedarburg) defeated Chris Beegle and Rob Iaacs of Dickinson, 8-6 in the first round of the doubles competition, but were eliminated by Harrison Lee and Aaron Scherb of Haverford in the quarterfinals, 8-4. Lee and Scherb were seeded second.

* Freshman Nick Kennedy (Tucson, AZ/Deerfield Academy) and sophomore Krishna Potarazu (Potomac, MD/Wootton) fell to Washington College's second-seeded team of Ben Dermis and Vivian Chhetri, 8-5 in the first round.
