NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The Johns Hopkins men's tennis team, ranked #8 in the Atlantic South, defeated #11 Christopher Newport University 6-1 on Sunday. The Blue Jays won eight of nine matches to earn the win.

Hopkins opened the match by sweeping the doubles matches, taking an early 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Sophomore Joe Vasoontara (Bangok, Thailand/Loomis Chaffee) and junior Hillen Smith (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin), ranked eighth in the region, won at first doubles. The pair, now 4-3 overall, beat Eddie Glidewell and John Mook 8-3. At second doubles, junior Nick Kennedy (Tucson, AZ/Deerfield Academy) and sophomore Rafi Roberti (Summit, NJ/Summit) paired to beat Steven Inge and Worth Richardson 8-4. And at third doubles, sophomores Matt Naftilan (Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy) and Kevin Ma (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) paired for their first win together, 8-1 over Matt Brueggeman and Anthony Rinaldis.

In singles play, Hopkins won five of the six matches to take the win over Christopher Newport. Roberti and Ma each won in straight sets at third and fourth singles respectively. Smith, Naftilan and freshman Larry Wei (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) all won in three sets at second, fifth and sixth singles respectively. Smith beat Inge 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to improve to 4-1 at second singles. Roberti won easily over Rinaldis 6-2, 6-1 and is now 4-1 at third singles. Ma won 6-1, 6-4 over Richardson and now stands at 4-1 at fourth singles. Naftilan beat Brueggeman 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to improve to 2-2 at fifth singles. Wei, after losing 6-4 in the first set, bounced back to win 6-0, 6-0 in the second and third sets over Adam Peters. Wei improves to 4-4 overall. Vasoontara, ranked 19th in the region, lost to #12 Glidewell at first singles. Vasoontara won the first set 6-4, but Glidewell came back and won 6-2, 6-2 in the second and third sets.
 

 

The Blue Jays return to action on Wednesday, April 12 when the Gettysburg Bullets visit Baltimore. The match is set for 3:30 p.m.
