BALTIMORE, MD - The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's tennis team knocked off another ranked opponent on Wednesday afternoon in its first home match of the season, beating 13th-ranked Kalamazoo 8-1. Hopkins improves to 5-2 on the season with its third straight win. The Hornets suffer just their second loss of the season and fall to 7-2.

Hopkins got the match off to a good start, winning all three doubles. Senior David Maldow and junior Andrew Wang won 8-2 over Patrick Boyd and Cyrus Jadun at first. Sophomore Warren Elgort and junior Ryan Rauck then won a close 8-6 match at third over Steve Hanselman and Mark Denefeld. Sophomore Jacob Barnaby and junior Casey Blythe closed out doubles winning a tight 9-8 (9-7) match at second over Nate Eddy and Jason Brown.

In singles action, Hopkins won five of the six matches to take home the 8-1 win. Maldow picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at first over Eddy to get things going. Elgort won at third, beating Brown, 7-5, 6-2. At fourth freshman Andy Hersh won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 over Denefeld. Freshman Morgan Dauer also won in straight sets, winning 7-5, 6-0 at sixth. At fifth, Barnaby dropped his first set, 7-6 (8-6), but rallied to win the second, 6-4, and force a third-set tiebreaker. He prevailed, 10-7, in the tiebreaker to take the match. Kalamazoo picked up their lone point of the match at second, as Jadun won a tightly contested match over Wang. Wang won the first set, 6-4, but Jadun won the second, 7-5. The two then played a third-set tiebreaker, which Jadun won, 10-6.

Hopkins returns to action on Friday, March 26 against Chicago and conference foe McDaniel. The Blue Jays will square off versus Chicago at home at 3:30 pm. The other half of the team will travel to Westminster for a 4:00 pm match with McDaniel.
