Baltimore, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming teams each defeated Loyola and St. Peter's while falling to Syracuse at the Thomas Murphy Invitational held Friday and Saturday at Loyola.

The JHU men defeated Loyola, 208-112, and St. Peter's, 243-19, but fell to the Orangemen, 219-111. The Hopkins women topped Loyola, 182-138, and St. Peter's, 218-62, and dropped a 266-58 decision to Syracuse.

Senior Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/West Morris Central/Bernards) led the Blue Jay men by winning both the 1650 freestyle in 15:54.47 and the 500 freestyle in 4:39.54, while senior Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts) took the 200 freestyle in 1:44.95.

Brannock also finished second in the 100 freestyle in 48.07, while junior Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Contestoga) took second in both the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.99 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.59. Freshman Matthew Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) came in second in the 1650 freestyle in 16:27.95, while fellow newcomer Sean Kim (Silver Spring, NJ/Paint Branch) placed second in the 200 butterfly in 1:59.09.
 

 

The JHU 200 medley relay team of Brandon Loftus (Milwaukee, WI/Marquette), Pitz, David Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), and Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) finished second in 1:37.79, while the 800 freestyle relay team of Robinson, Armstrong, Brannock, and Lofthus also came in second in 7:08.22.

The Hopkins women were paced by senior Stephanie Harbeson (Harriman, NY/The Peddie School-NJ), who finished second in both the 500 freestyle in 5:11.28 and the 200 freestyle in 1:57.27. The other second place finishes in individual events went to freshman Stephanie Leaman (Grosse Point Woods, MI/Groose Point North), who finished the 1650 freestyle in 18:01.31, and freshman Kristin Stepaniak (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View), who finished the 200 breaststroke in 2:29.59.

The Blue Jay 200 medley relay team of Sida Liu (Phoenix, AZ/North Canyon), Jessica Chang (Penfield, NY/Penfield), Diana Smirnova (Las Cruces, NM/Phillips Exeter Academy), and Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) came in second in 1:52.40, while the 800 freestyle relay team of Smirnova, Harbeson, Carly Benner (Stockton, CA/Lincoln), and Liu also placed second in 8:02.83.

Both Hopkins teams return to the pool this Saturday and Sunday by competing in the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, GA.
