BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins senior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) has been named the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Swimmer of the Week for his efforts in the Blue Jays dual meet at Maryland. Hopkins lost at Maryland, 146.5-91.5 on Friday afternoon.
Thomas, the reigning NCAA Champion in both the 100 and 200 Back, swept both the 50 and 100 Back events on Friday. He touched the wall in the 50 with a time of 24.37 and followed that with a time of 52.21 in the 100 Back. He also led off the Blue Jays second-place 200 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relays, with splits of 24.56 and 21.67, respectively. Thomas also won the 50-meter Back in Hopkins' season-opening dual meet at Navy.
Thomas swept the 100 and 200 Back events at the 2009 NCAA Championships to bring his career total to four NCAA titles. He was part of the 400 Medley Relay winning team in 2007, then won the 200 Back in 2008. In addition, he holds both the school and NCAA records in the 100 (48.52) and 200 (1:46.71) Back.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 31 as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA to take on Franklin & Marshall in their first dual meet this season against a Division III opponent. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
