Sept. 15, 2009

CAPE COD, MA - Johns Hopkins 2009 graduate John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) has been named the ECAC Division III Male Robbins Scholar-Athlete. Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Commissioner Rudy Keeling announced today the six recipients. Sponsored by the Cincinnati-based sports surfaces company, the Robbins Scholar-Athlete Awards honor the outstanding academic and athletic achievements of student-athletes representing ECAC schools in Divisions I, II, and III. One male and one female student-athlete from each division are selected based on extraordinary achievements in academics, athletics, and community service.

Kegelman, a breaststroke and relays swimmer on the Johns Hopkins University men's swimming team, graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average in mechanical engineering. He earned a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and is pursuing a Ph.D. in the area of robotics within the field of mechanical engineering at Stanford University. Kegelman was also named a CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine First Team Academic All-American as well as the Academic All-American of the Year for the At-Large program. In addition, he also received the Dr. William Howard Award, presented to the top senior student-athlete at Johns Hopkins who excels in academics and athletics.

Kegelman helped Johns Hopkins to three top 10 finishes at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, including a 2008 second place finish. His hard work earned him the spot as a two-time team captain and five-time All-American, where he earned first team All-American honors in the 200 and 400 medley relays as a senior.

This year's winners of the ECAC Robbins Scholar-Athlete Awards are Briana Stremick (United States Military Academy) and Jimmy Baron (University of Rhode Island) in Division I, Kyrie Timbrook (Caldwell College) and Patrick Cunningham (Dowling College) in Division II, and LeighAnn Burke (DeSales University) and John Kegelman (Johns Hopkins University) in Division III. They will receive their awards on Tuesday, October 6, during the ECAC Honors Luncheon presented by Jostens.
