Lofthus, Alford Named To Verizon All-District II First Team
May 23, 2003 Edinboro, PA - Johns Hopkins senior swimmer David Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) and senior tennis player Kevin Alford (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon Township) were named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America College Division District II Spring At-Large Team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Lofthus, who has a 3.98 grade point average in biology, led the Blue Jays to a second place finish at the 2003 Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships by scoring points in the maximum seven events. He finished fourth in the 100 butterfly in 49.46, sixth in the 200 individual medley in 1:53.49, and seventh in the 100 backstroke in 51.05, and was a member of four relay teams. Lofthus, a 13-time All-American in swimming, was named to the national second team last year and was awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship earlier this month.
Lofthus, who has done scientific research at the Johns Hopkins University Bayview Medical Center and the University of Rochester Medical Center, was enrolled in a cardiac surgery clerkship as part of a Johns Hopkins University Medical Tutorial Project. He is a Dean's List student at Hopkins, is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, has consistently maintained a National Merit Scholarship, and was offered admission to the Golden Key International Honor Society. Lofthus, who has published poetry in the International Library of Poetry, was also a child-life volunteer at the Johns Hopkins University Children's Center last summer. Alford, who has a 3.83 grade point average with a double major in chemistry and history, was named to the all-district second team in 2001. He finished this season with a 13-3 record, including a 7-1 mark in the Centennial Conference, at No. 1 singles for the Blue Jays. Alford earned the No. 3 seed and advanced to the conference men's singles final this season, and defeated 25th-ranked Nick Peel of Salisbury 6-3, 6-4 on April 17. Alford, who was an all-conference selection in both singles and doubles in 2002, also teamed with sophomore Justin Belisario (Los Angeles, CA/Loyola) to post an 8-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark in the league at No. 1 doubles. Alford and Belisario earned the No. 2 seed in the conference doubles tournament but lost in the quarterfinals. Alford finished his career with a 41-12 singles record and a 34-17 doubles mark. Alford was selected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, and recently graduated from Hopkins with university and department honors. Like Lofthus, he was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the Golden Key Honor Society. The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Athletes named to the district first team qualify for the national ballot, with the team announced on June 10. -30- |
