The Team: The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team finished in second place for the second consecutive season by earning 384.5 points at the 2003 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships held on March 20-22 in Atlanta.

Below is a rundown of Hopkins' top individual performers at the 2003 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Please note that individuals and relays which place in the top eight earn First Team All-America honors. Individuals and relays which place ninth through 16th earn Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Armstrong Leads Blue Jays: Senior Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/West Morris Central/Bernards) led Hopkins at the NCAA Championships by finishing second in both the 1650 freestyle in 15:28.83 and the 400 individual medley in 3:56.17. Armstrong, who placed fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:27.29, was also a member of the second-place 800 freestyle relay (6:41.33) and 400 freestyle relay (3:03.19) teams.

Brannock Ends Career Strong: Senior Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts) finished his career by scoring points in seven events, the maximum an individual can enter. Brannock finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:38.24, and was fifth in both the 50 freestyle in 21.05 and the 100 freestyle in 45.83. Brannock was a member of the second-place 400 medley relay (3:21.25), 800 freestyle relay (6:41.33), and 400 freestyle relay (3:03.19) teams, and was also a member of the fourth-place 200 freestyle relay team (1:23.57).

Lofthus Scores In Seven Events: Senior David Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) also ended his career by scoring points in seven events. Lofthus finished fourth in the 100 butterfly in 49.46, sixth in the 200 individual medley in 1:53.49, and seventh in the 100 backstroke in 51.05. Lofthus was a member of the second-place 400 medley relay (3:21.25), 800 freestyle relay (6:41.33), and 400 freestyle relay (3:03.19) teams, and was also a member of the fourth-place 200 medley relay team (1:33.25).

Balfour Earns Points For Hopkins: Sophomore J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East) placed seventh in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.67, 10th in the 200 individual medley in 1:53.29, and 13th in the 400 individual medley in 4:05.58. Balfour also was a member of the 400 medley relay team that finished second in 3:21.55 and the 200 medley relay team that finished fourth in 1:33.25.

Pitz Scores In Four Events: Junior Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Conestoga) finished third in the 200 breaststroke in 2:03.40 and fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 57.15. Pitz also was a member of the 400 medley relay team that finished second in 3:21.55 and the 200 medley relay team that finished fourth in 1:33.25.

Kleinman Picks Up Valuable Points: Sophomore Jon Kleinman (North Oaks, MN/Mounds View) finished ninth in the 1650 freestyle in 16:07.03, 10th in the 500 freestyle in 4:35.37, and 14th in the 400 individual medley in 4:05.60.

Harris Leads JHU Newcomers: Freshman Tyler Harris (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) placed 13th in the 100 breaststroke in 57.75 and was a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that finished fourth in 1:23.57.

Levin Earns Points In Relays: Senior Mark Levin (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) was a member of the fourth-place 200 freestyle relay (1:23.57) and 200 medley relay (1:33.25) teams.

Robinson Swims In Relays: Junior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that finished second in 3:03.19 and the 200 freestyle relay team that placed fourth in 1:23.57.

Buccicone Scores In Two Events: Junior Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Rochester Lourdes) finished 14th in the 200 butterfly in 1:54.47 and was a member of the 800 freestyle relay team that placed second in 6:41.33.

Hamilton Scores In Breaststroke: Freshman Zane Hamilton (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) finished 12th in the 200 breaststroke in 2:06.41.

Chana Earns Points In Freestyle: Freshman Matthew Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) placed 15th in the 1650 freestyle in 16:11.63.

Sneed Scores In Butterfly: Freshman Brian Sneed (Chattanooga, TN/McCallie) finished 15th in the 200 butterfly in 1:55.04.
