GAMBIER, OH - The Johns Hopkins men's swim team, competing against both Division I and Division III teams, placed fifth at the annual Nike Cup Invitational hosted by Kenyon College. The Blue Jays accumulated 274 points in the three-day event as several Blue Jays posted NCAA B qualifying and season-best times.

Hopkins opened up action on Thursday night with the 1650 Free. Freshman Jonathan Gordon (Potomac, MD/Richard Montgomery) took with a time of 16:54.06, a career-best. Freshman Markus Kowalsky (St. Louis Park, MN/International School of Minnesota) followed closely in 21st place with a time of 16:54.45. The Blue Jays then claimed ninth in the 800 Free Relay with a time of 6:58.82. Senior Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood), freshman Dan Raynard (Glenview, IL/Loyola Academy), junior John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) and senior David Postetter (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor) swam the relay for JHU.

On Friday, Hopkins opened with a sixth place finish in the 200 Free Relay in a time of 1:24.86. Junior Chris Whelan (Haddonfield, NJ/Delbarton School), Thomas, freshman Eddy Zandee (Kailua, HI/Punahou) and junior Teddy Bulakul (Bangkok, Thailand/Hotchkiss) swam the relay. Kleinguetl followed with a fifth place finish in the 200 Fly with a season-best and NCAA B time of 1:52.37. Freshman Stephen Niemiec (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester Adams) placed 13th in 1:54.98 and senior Bob Sershon (Chicago, IL/St. Patrick) took 15th in 1:56.97. Sophomore Jonathan Pool (Montgomery Village, MD/Georgetown Prep) finished in 21st place with a time of 1:59.16. Niemiec, Sershon and Pool all swam season-best times.
 

 

Sophomore Alex Hsieh (Beijing, China/International School of Beijing) finished in 22nd in the bonus consolation of the 200 Free with a time of 1:46.34. Freshman Tim Nam (Forest Hills, NY/Bronx High School of Science) then took 15th in the 100 Breast in 59.91. Senior John Kegelman (Yorktown, VA/Tabb) took 23rd in 1:00.85. Thomas followed up with a silver finish in the 100 Back, posting an NCAA A time of 50.63, a season-best. Hsieh placed 22nd with a time of 54.04.

In the 400 IM, Kleinguetl placed 14th with a finals time of 4:11.51, a season-best time. In the bonus consolation, freshman Patrick Lynch (Surrey, England/ACS Cobham International School) took 22nd (4:15.62) while Kowalsky took 23rd (4:18.08). Both times were season-best for the freshmen. Bulakul took 21st in the 50 Free, finishing in 21.87. The Blue Jays wrapped up the night with a seventh place finish in the 400 Medley Relay in 3:27.50, an NCAA B time. Swimming the relay were Thomas, Nam, Sershon and Bulakul.

Hopkins opened Saturday with an eighth place finish in the 200 Medley Relay in a time of 1:35.84. Swimming the relay were Thomas, freshman Nicolas Gimenez (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale), Sershon and Bulakul. In the 500 Free, Kleinguetl took 19th with a finals time of 4:44.16, a season-best time. Thomas followed with a fifth place finish in the 200 Back with a finals time of 1:54.69. His prelim time of 1:52.69 was a season-best and an NCAA B time. Niemiec finished in 20th with a time of 1:55.72, also a season-best.

Three Blue Jays placed in the 100 Fly, led by Sershon's 10th place finish in 51.00, an NCAA B time and season-best. Junior Spiros Moisiades (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) took 19th (52.02) and Bulakul took 22nd (53.07). Moisiades finals' time and Bulakul's prelim time (52.34) were both season-bests.

Hopkins placed four in the 200 Breast. Kegelman took 14th (2:12.38), followed by Nam in 15th (2:14.10). Sophomore Chris Razavi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) finished in 19th (2:15.05), while freshman Erik von Heijne (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) took 22nd (2:17.26). In the 100 Free, Thomas swam to a 13th place finish in a finals time of 47.20. His prelim time of 47.12 was a season-best. Bulakul finished in 23rd in 47.93, also a season-best.

The Blue Jays wrapped up the weekend with 13th and 14th place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Whelan, Thomas, Bulakul and Kleinguetl swam a finals time of 3:12.94. Zandee, Niemiec, Raynard and Gimenez finished in 3:13.46.

Hopkins returns to action on January 8 against William & Mary in West Palm Beach, FL.
