Swimming Teams Finish Fifth And Seventh At Miami Invitational

OXFORD, OH - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team finished fifth and the women placed seventh at the 11th annual Miami University Invitational, held at the Corwin Nixon Natatorium this past weekend, Dec. 3-5. Miami won the women's meet while Kenyon finished first on the men's side with nearly 650 more points than the second-place team. The Blue Jay men carried a second-place standing through two days and were 44.5 points ahead of third-place Miami entering Sunday's events. On Saturday, Hopkins placed second in the 200 medley relay as Ryan Kim, Tyler Harris, Brian Sneed and Brad Test came in at 1:32.72, just behind Kenyon's winning time of 1:32.59. Jon Kleinman and Matt Fedderly placed fourth and sixth in the 400 IM, and Fedderly, Harris and Zane Hamilton took fourth, fifth and sixth in the 100 breaststroke. In the final event of the evening, Fedderly, Hamilton, Ryan Kim and Sean Kim finished sixth in the 800 freestyle relay, helping Johns Hopkins carry its second-place team finish through two consecutive days. Miami earned 1057.5 points, more than it received in the first two days combined, on Sunday to move past Johns Hopkins and Kenyon into first place. Cleveland State and Louisville also jumped ahead of the Blue Jays, who earned just 56 points on the final day.
Hopkins started off strong in Sunday's prelims as Ryan Kim took silver in the first men's event, the 200 backstroke. Test placed fourth in the 100 freestyle, coming in just under a second behind the winner. Fedderly, Hamilton and Harris finished first, second and fifth in the 200 breaststroke, and Sean Kim, Brian Sneed and Gary Itskovich went three, four, five in the 200 butterfly. Matt Chana (15:58.31) and Kleinman (16:10.66) placed second and sixth in the 1650 freestyle but Hopkins fell behind Kenyon, Miami, Cleveland State and Louisville during the evening's finals. The Blue Jay women, who were in sixth place after both Day 1 and Day 2, fell behind Cleveland State on Sunday for a seventh-place finish. On Saturday, the 200 medley relay team of Erica Pakkala, Jessica Chang, Kelly Robinson and Abiona Redwood finished fifth at 1:48.72 while Miami won the event in 1:47.86. Jessica Chang placed fourth in the 100 backstroke and Pakkala wrapped up the day with a fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke. In the prelims the following morning, Katie Herbst and Pakkala took eighth and ninth in the 200 backstroke and Kalei Walker placed ninth in the 100 freestyle. Stephanie Leaman finished seventh in the prelims of the 1650 freestyle and earned a final placement of 15th in that event. The Johns Hopkins swimming teams return to action on January 14-15 at home against West Chester and The College of New Jersey.
