Armstrong Sets NCAA Division III Record In 1650 Free At Miami Invitational

Oxford, OH - Johns Hopkins senior Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/West Morris Central/Bernards) set the school record and broke the NCAA Division III record by five seconds while winning the 1650 freestyle in 15:20.62 on the first night of the Miami Invitational. The Blue Jay men's swimming team is in second place while the women are fourth at the invitational. The men totaled 191 points Thursday and trail only Division III powerhouse Kenyon, which has 227 points. The women scored 134 points, behind Kenyon (208), Illinois (180), and Indiana (148). In addition to Armstrong's historic time, freshman Matthew Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) placed fifth in 15:51.47, sophomore Jon Kleinman (North Oaks, MN/Mounds View) finished sixth in 15:56.19, and freshman Matt Emmett (Chalfont, PA/Germantown Academy) came in 31st in 17:26.50.
The JHU 800 freestyle relay team of junior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional), senior Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts), senior David Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), and Armstrong finished second in its race in 6:43.56, while the team of senior Mark Levin (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson), junior Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Rochester Lourdes), freshman Gary Itskovich (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood HS at Brooklyn College), and junior Dan Hake (Wilton, CT/Wilton) placed 10th in 7:09.97.
Freshman Stephanie Leaman (Grosse Point Woods, MI/Grosse Point North) led the JHU women in the 1650 freestyle with a 17:46.05 finish in 13th place, while fellow freshman Katie Herbst (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) finished 16th in 17:57.43. Sophomore Meghan Bullock (Phoenix, AZ/Phoenix Country Day) came in 18th in 18:07.97, freshman Carly Benner (Stockton, CA/Lincoln) was 19th in 18:12.44, and freshman Caitlin Kunkel (Warwick, RI/St. Mary-Academy-Bay View) finished 20th in 18:14.38. The Hopkins 800 freestyle relay team of sophomore Diana Smirnova (Lac Cruces, NM/Phillips Exeter Academy), senior Stephanie Harbeson (Harriman, NY/The Peddie School-NJ), sophomore Michelle Phillips (Northridge, CA/Phillips Exeter Academy), and Benner placed eighth in 7:47.81, while the team of sophomore Betsy Maragakes (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East), Kunkel, junior Emma Gregory (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), and junior Liz Schlicher (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) placed 14th in 7:58.71.
