Men's Swimming Team Finishes Day 1 Of Miami Invitational In Second Place

OXFORD, OH - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team is in second place and the women are in sixth after Day 1 of the Miami Invitational at Corwin Nixon Natatorium. The Blue Jay men have 378 points behind Kenyon's 531 points at the 11th annual tournament, which continues through Sunday, Dec. 5. Leading the men's strong Day 1 finish was a sweep in the 200 IM by Matt Fedderly (1:52.61), Zane Hamilton (1:54.03) and Ryan Kim (1:54.03). In the prelims on Friday morning, J.P. Balfour won the 200 IM at 1:52.82. Finishing behind him in the second and third spots were Fedderly (1:54.06) and Hamilton (1:54.20), while Kim (1:56.59) placed ninth.
Brad Test placed fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.16 after finishing the prelim round in third place at 21.14. The 400 medley relay team of Kim, Fedderly, Brian Sneed and Test finished third at 3:25.13 behind Cleveland State and Cincinnati in the evening session. In the men's 500 freestyle preliminary event, Richard Guerard, Jon Kleinman and Matt Chana placed fourth (4:36.54), sixth (4:37.09) and seventh (4:37.69) to advance to the finals, where they finished fifth (4:35.25), eighth (4:40.12) and ninth (4:40.74). The men enter Day 2 with 378 points, ahead of Miami (320), Louisville (308), Cleveland State (289), Cincinnati (183) and Wheeling Jesuit (109), and 153 points behind leader Kenyon (531). On the women's side, Katie Herbst finished seventh in the prelims of the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:08.10, qualifying her for the finals on Friday night. Herbst improved her time to 5:05.78 in the finals, good for a sixth-place finish. Diana Smirnova also made a jump from her finish in the prelims to her final placing, as she came in ninth at 2:10.63 in the 200 IM prelims and then finished third in the finals with a time of 2:08.98. In the evening relays, the 200 freestyle team of Abiona Redwood, Kalei Walker, Melissa Hambleton and Kelly Robinson finished seventh at 1:39.33 while Erika Pakkala, Allie Foster, Robinson and Walker combined for a sixth-place finish in the 400 medley relay at 3:58.60. The women enter Day 2 with 228 points, behind Miami (498), Louisville (364), Kenyon (357.50, Marshall (331.50) and Ohio State (287), and ahead of Cleveland State (210), Wheeling Jesuit (106) and Cincinnati (12). |
