Hopkins in Third Place Heading into Final Day of Nike Cup

GAMBIER, OH - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team is in third place in the Nike Cup Invitational heading into the final day on Saturday. Senior Matt Fedderly (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh School) and sophomore John Thomas (Montrose, CO/Montrose) each set pool and Hopkins' records in Friday's action. In Thursday's action, Hopkins finished in second in the 800 Free Relay with a NCAA Division III B qualifying time of 6:45.34. Swimming the relay were senior Brad Test (Dresher, PA/Germantown Academy), sophomore Neil Mahoney (Excelsior, MN/Minnetonka), Thomas and junior David Postetter (Kenmore, WA/Inglemoor). On Friday, the Blue Jays opened with a third place finish in the 200 Free Relay. Test, Thomas, Fedderly and Mahoney swam a DIII B qualifying time of 1:23.20. Junior Colin Kleinguetl (Kingwood, TX/Kingwood) then finished sixth in the 200 Fly with a DIII B time of 1:53.58. Mahoney then claimed sixth in the 200 Free, finishing in 1:43.89. His prelim time of 1:42.51 is a career best. In the next event, Fedderly won the 100 Breast in a pool and Hopkins record time of 56.23. Not to be outdone, Thomas followed that by breaking his own pool record with a time of 49.37 in the 100 Back. Earlier in the day, Thomas had set the pool record with his prelim time of 50.27. His time of 49.37 bested the Hopkins record by more than one second. Both Fedderly and Thomas' times were NCAA DIII A qualifying times. Test then took second in the 50 Free, setting the pool record and a new career best with a time of 20.43. It was also a DIII A qualifying time. Hopkins wrapped up the day by winning the 400 Medley Relay with a DIII A qualifying time and pool record of 3:22.96.
The Nike Cup Invitational concludes on Saturday night with the finals of the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Back, 500 Free, 100 Fly, 200 Breast, 100 Free, 200 IM and 400 Free Relay. |
