Chapel Hill, NC - The Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming teams each fell at nationally-ranked North Carolina Saturday morning in Koury Natatorium. The No. 15 Tar Heel men topped the Blue Jays, 187-97, while the No. 11 Carolina women defeated Hopkins, 195-84.

Senior Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/West Morris Central/Bernards) led the JHU men's team by winning the 1000 freestyle in 9:27.11 and the 500 freestyle in 4:37.88, while sophomore J.P. Balfour (Plano, TX/Plano East) took the 200 backstroke in 1:58.08. The Hopkins 400 freestyle relay team of senior Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts), junior Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional), freshman Zane Hamilton (Chattanoga, TN/McCallie), and senior Mark Levin (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) won its race in 3:11.88
 

 

Brannock finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:43.35, while senior David Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) came in second in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.12 and freshman Matthew Chana (Northbrook, IL/Glenbrook North) was second in the 1000 freestyle in 9:55.45. Additionally, JHU's other 400 freestyle relay team of junior Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Rochester Lourdes), sophomore Paul Zalewski (St. Louis, MO/Kirkwood), Chana, and junior Matt McKee (Rocky River, OH/St. Edward) finished second in 3:24.76.

Senior Stephanie Harbeson (Harriman, NY/The Peddie School-NY) led the Hopkins women by winning the 500 freestyle in 5:11.58, while the JHU 400 freestyle relay team of freshman Katie Herbst (West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford), junior Emma Gregory (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough), junior Liz Schlicher (Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes), and sophomore Kate Purvis (Hartsdale, NY/Pinecrest-Fort Lauderdale-FL), won its race in 3:58.22.

Freshman Abiona Redwood (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) finished second in the 100 freestyle in 57.33, while fellow freshman Kristin Stepaniak (Shoreview, MN/Mounds View) placed second in the 200 backstroke in 2:26.92. Other second place finishers for the Hopkins women were junior Megan Rudinsky (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park), who finished the 100 butterfly in 1:00.71, and sophomore Betsy Maragakes (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East), who finished the 200 individual medley in 2:21.02.

The meet served as a homecoming for JHU head coach George Kennedy, who was a letterwinner on the North Carolina men's swimming team from 1973 through 1976.

The Blue Jays return to action on December 5 through 7 when they compete in the Miami of Ohio Invitaional.
