BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team defeated Loyola, Virginia Military Institute and Howard to win the Thomas Murphy Invitational held at Loyola's Fitness and Aquatic Center last Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12-13. The women's team also defeated Howard but fell to Loyola for the first time in Blue Jay history, earning a second-place finish at the meet.

The men defeated Howard 240-42, Loyola 182-116 and VMI 243-84 while the women beat Howard 222-84 and lost to Loyola 177-153.

Both teams got off to a perfect start as Melissa Hambleton, Erica Pakala, Kalei Walker and Kelly Robinson captured gold medals in the tournament's first event, the women's 200 freestyle relay. The men's team did the same in Event 2 with Brian Sneed, Zane Hamilton, Tyler Harris and Paul Zalewski edging Loyola by four tenths of a second for first place.
 

 

Other men's gold-medal performances include Matthew Chana in the 1650 freestyle, Ryan Kim in the 200 backstroke, Matt Fedderly in the 200 breaststroke, Dan Kim in the 100 backstroke, Alex Johnson in the 200 IM, and J.P. Balfour in both the 200 IM and 400 IM, an event that saw Hopkins' swimmers also place second, third and fourth.

On the women's side, Jessica Chang took first in the 100 breaststroke, Stephanie Laperle in the 200 butterfly, Allie Foster in the 200 breastroke and Pakala in the 100 backstroke.

The women's team of Pakala, Robinson, Hambleton and Abiona Redwood also placed first in the 200 medley while Balfour, Harris, Sneed and Hamilton captured gold in the men's 200 medley.

The Johns Hopkins men's and women's swimming teams host Yale next Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 3 p.m.
